Chiropractic is a health care discipline that emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of
the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic
focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily of the spine) and function (as
coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and
restoration of health. In addition, doctors of chiropractic recognize the value and
responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care practitioners when in the best
interest of the patient.
Doctors of chiropractic use natural or non-invasive approaches including manual
interventions (for example, spinal adjustments, a specific form of manipulation), physical
therapy services, exercise programs, nutritional counseling, lifestyle modification, and other
patient education.
Doctors of chiropractic provide conservative management for patients with
neuromusculoskeletal disorders, including but not limited to, back pain, neck pain, and
headaches. Although chiropractic patients are typically under care for musculoskeletal
conditions, patients often find a variety of other conditions respond to chiropractic care.
Abnormal motion and position of the spinal bones that cause nerve interference is called a
vertebral subluxation. Sometimes this condition is also called somatic dysfunction.
Doctors of chiropractic encourage periodic spinal examinations and preventive or wellness
care. Our professional goal is normal function of the neuromusculoskeletal system
throughout life for the optimum expression of health. Just as patients choose the level of
care they prefer from the family dentist, many people enjoy the benefits of regular
chiropractic care.
Chiropractic was founded in the United States in 1895 and is now established in over 70
countries. There are approximately 65,000 doctors of chiropractic in the United States, and
90,000 internationally.
About Chiropractic
Vertebral Subluxation Complex aka Somatic Segmental Dysfunction
A Vertebral Subluxation Complex consists of any of these 5 primary components:
1. Abnormal motion and position of the spinal bones (vertebrae). You may notice that you cannot
move as well as you should (generalized loss of motion), or you may notice it is easier to move to one side
compared to the other (asymmetrical loss of motion). This may or may not be painful.
2. Abnormal nervous system function. You may notice symptoms such as pain (can be sharp, achy or
dull), or numbness and/or tingling in a part of the body (often in the hands or feet).
3. Abnormal muscle function. You may notice that muscles are tight and sore for prolonged periods of
time. You may also feel muscle spasm or weakness in the arms/legs or along the entire spine, and/or
"cramping" in the hands, calves, or feet.
4. Abnormal soft tissue changes. You may notice an area is inflamed, tender, warm or swollen.
Typically this occurs with injury, like muscle strains and ligament sprains, which in turn can cause
abnormal position of the bones and can "pinch" a nerve or damage the spinal joints or discs.
5. Degeneration. This is accelerated or premature wear and tear in the spinal structures or problems in
other organ systems. Just like the front end of a car being out of alignment causes excess wear and tear
of the tires, having your spine out of alignment causes excess wear and tear in the spinal bones, discs,
and/or nerves. People are sometimes told they have "arthritis" in the spine. Correction of the spinal
malfunction may slow or even reverse these degenerative changes.
Common conditions we have had success in treating:
Your nervous system controls and coordinates every cell, tissue and organ in your body,
Chiropractic care can have a dramatic impact on your overall health and performance. Some
people seek chiropractic care to relieve pain or other obvious symptom, other people seek
chiropractic care when they are well to increase health potential:
Whiplash: Usually associated with automobile accidents, whiplash can occur in any situation that causes
a sudden movement of the head (backward, forward, or sideways). The result is pulled, torn or strained
muscles, over-stretched or sprained ligaments, and misalignment of the bones in the neck and spine.
Chiropractic treatment helps reduce inflammation and restore normal motion and position of the spinal
structures so the body can heal the damaged tissues and prevent or minimize permanent damage.
Lower Back Pain: A very common complaint, lower back pain can be the result of improper sitting, lifting,
an injury, or an inherited abnormality. These and other factors can cause or aggravate a condition know
as Vetebral Subluxation Complex. Undetected, other conditions can result, such as damaged discs and
irritated or "pinched" nerves. Chiropractic is extremely safe and effective. Studies show that for many
suffers of low back pain, chiropractic care is safer and more effective than drugs or surgery. Other
studies show that patients under chiropractic care were able to return to normal function and resume
activity more quickly than other patients treated with conventional medical treatments.
Pinched Nerves and Disc Problems: Spinal discs can be damaged through injury, or can deteriorate
through lost circulation of joint fluids and nutrients. Through the restoration of proper position and natural
motion, the effects of trauma and deterioration can be slowed, halted, or even reversed, and the healing
process renewed preventing accelerated permanent damage and disability.
Sciatica: The sciatic nerve runs down the back of each leg, and when compressed, "pinched" or irritated,
can cause severe leg pain. One of the most common sources of sciatic pain is actually found in the spine
(not the leg). When vertebrae and/or discs "pinch" with the sciatic nerve, the pain is felt in one or both
legs. The chiropractic approach is to restore the normal motion and position of the affected portions of
the spine, reducing irritation to the affected nerves ("un-pinching"), and allowing the body to heal itself in
that area to relieve the pain.
Headaches: Life's stress, toxic fumes, and other conditions are blamed for most headaches. However, a
frequently overlooked (and common) cause of headaches is stress and malfunction of the spinal bones in
the neck and upper back, which can interfere with nerves and blood vessels to the head. Correction of
these Subluxations can reduce or in many cases eliminate headaches.
Neck Pain: Recurring neck pain is a common complaint. The Chiropractic approach is to locate the
underlying cause of the problem, and not just attempt to cover up the symptoms with drugs. A Vertebral
Subluxation complex in the neck or upper back frequently causes neck pain. In addition to reducing or
eliminating the pain, chiropractic care often results in greater freedom of motion and better overall health
once the irritated nerves begin to heal.
Carpal Tunnel: Hand pain and numbness of carpal tunnel syndrome is a frequent complaint and often
not associated with Chiropractic treatment. What most people don't realize is that the cause of the
condition is usually pinched nerves and impaired circulation in the carpal "tunnel" of the wrist or "pinched"
nerves in the neck that radiate all the way down to the hand. Chiropractic treatment has demonstrated
effective treatment for carpal tunnel symptoms.
Pregnancy Pain: Many women feel low back pain during pregnancy due to rapid fetal development and
weight gain, hormonal changes, and an increased laxity in connective ligaments. Chiropractic care can
help relieve the discomfort, as well as maximize a normal nervous system function leading to improved
health for both mother and baby. Special chiropractic procedures are used that are safe and effective for
both mother and baby!
